Éclair Tonnerre

As someone who speaks French I facepalmed as her name literally translates to Lightning Thunder, in case it wasn't obvious she was Haruka's weakness incarnate.

Either way I enjoyed the episode, it capitalized on numerous dramatic buildups and finally showed Haruka returning Tamaki's feelings albeit through jealousy. It's a shame the anime only has one more episode to finish up, but I think they should be able to tie off most of the loose ends satisfactorily if they try or have an inoffensive non-ending if they choose not to.

Oh man, I figured out the translation of her name a while back, but I never put two and two together, and now I'm feeling a bit stupid.

I think they probably were thinking of the pastry.

Yeah, seconding the manga recommendation as well! I'll probably do a post promoting it in the last thread, but it is really good and fans of the show should definitely read it if they haven't already. IMO, it has one of the most satisfying endings ever.

I agree. I do like the manga ending more, but there are also elements from the anime ending that I wish were in the manga :)

But I'll save that for tomorrow (if I remember).

So, this is the beginning of the end! Although this episode is sort of based off a manga chapter, it pretty much diverges with the introduction of Eclair. There's a character who does play a similar sort of role in the manga in chapter 38, so I guess she may have been based on her, but I'm pretty sure that that chapter was roughly contemporaneous with the anime. The cultural festival chapter is also where we get to see Tamaki's family for the first time and learn of his backstory, so it's not a million miles away, but the plot's a bit different.

Gotta say, I really enjoyed seeing some of the characters from earlier in the series dancing at the beginning. It's nice to know that the teacup couple are still going strong, that the class president is in with a shot, and that Kasanoda now has a female fanclub, and his yakuza guys are cheering him on. Well done, Host Club, you achieved some things!

But a lot of this episode is pretty somber in tone - whether it's Tamaki's grandma just being rude and insulting, or Kyoya's dad slapping him, you can tell within the first couple of minutes that this is not going to be a fun episode. And, although the dynamics of the episode concern the Host Club as a whole, I think you could say that it pretty much focuses on Tamaki. Would that make it the first real Tamaki episode that we have? Although we get bits and pieces about his past revealed to us throughout the show, this is the episode that explicitly sets them out, as the hosts tell the story to Haruhi. And yeah, this gets to the real heart of why Tamaki is my favourite character - the fact that he manages to stay so upbeat, despite his "painful upbringing" is really just impressive and speaks miles about what a nice guy he is.

...And then the episode ends on a cliffhanger, which is fun!

P.S. Eclair always makes me laugh, because what a name! And I kind of forgot how weirdly sexual some of her scenes are. It's kind of bizarre, compared to the rest of the show, which...isn't really like that
