Hi everyone, I've construed "Ignis aurum probat, miseria fortes viros" to be taken as " fire tempers gold, adversity temper/strengthen solid men."

Since i am a woman i would prefer the same phrase in the feminine, so: "As fire tempers gold, therefore does adversity temper/strengthen women/strong women."

I've learned about the noun virago/viraginis as definition a strong or heroic woman. Might someone please interpret the whole feminine phrase? I'm open to including words various other than virago, if there's something more appropriate. Thanks!

The only word you need to change is "viros": you deserve to leave the remainder as castle are. Because that a woman, I would certainly suggest:

-> virago, together you said, usually means a strong woman, but a man-like mrs (if friend look in ~ them, you'll see "viros" and also "virago" have the very same root). Therefore that's a meaning you can not like. Anyway, if you choose this word, the appropriate form would be: "viragines".

You are watching: Ignis aurum probat, miseria fortes viros

-> various other words for mrs are:

-- femina: this is the regular, run of the mill word because that woman/female. Ns think this is the many uncomprising one and the appropriate form would be "feminas".

-- mulier: this is another, less frequent word because that female. It hasn't any extr connotations I can think of, therefore it can suit you also. The appropriate type would it is in "mulieres".

-- domina: this is another word that way woman, but kind of the mistress of a household. However, ladies were rarely considered in this means by themselves, they obtained that treatment since they to be the partner of a dominus, the "lord", although some affluent women and/or widows could be thought about like this. If you desire this one, that should show up as "dominas"

-- There are some various other words for women, yet only that a married status. Those to be "uxor" (a married women and that's all, the kind would be "uxores") and also "matrona", a woman of high regard since of her honest qualities and her capability rising children (the form, matronas).
